Conditions: 68 degrees, no wind, above average seeing

This nebula reveals both emission (red hydrogen) and diffuse (blue oxygen/helium) regions. Charles Messier described it as 'Cluster of Stars'. The name 'Trifid' was used by John Herschel 20 years after its discovery to describe this nebula. M20 is 5200 light years away.
