This large sunspot, labeled AR2529 has been visible on the sun's surface for over a week. Visually, sunspots appear dark (bright white in this inverted image) because their temperatures are significantly cooler than the surrounding surface (4500 versus 6000 degrees Celcius). Sunspots are associated with solar flares and coronal mass ejections. AR2529 has produced only modest CMEs.
