Pickering's Triangle (NGC 6979) in Cygnus

RA = 20 hrs 49 min; Dec = 31 deg 41 min.

Date & Site:

Imaged over 3 nights in August, 2015; Carlsbad, CA

Conditions: excellent seeing; 74 degrees; calm

Equipment:

Telescope: TEC 140 Refractor; 980mm at f/7

Mount: Losmandy G-11 with Gemini
Camera: ST-10XME; CFW10; Hutech OAG5 guider

Notes:

Exposures: 4.3 hours of Ha (in 20 minute subs) and 40 min each RGB (in 10-minute subexposures) for a total of 6 hours 20 minutes.

Pickering's triangle is part of the Veil nebula, a massive supernova remnant in Cygnus. The supernova that spawned this remnant and its companions is thought to have occurred 7,500 years ago. Pickering's triangle is named after a famous Harvard astronomer, Edward Charles Pickering (1846-1919).
