NGC 4565: Needle Galaxy in Coma Berenices

RA = 12 hrs 36 min; Dec = 25 deg 59 min.

Date & Site:

Imaged on 3/26/2015; Runningman Observatory, Carlsbad, CA

Conditions: calm; 60+ degrees; very good seeing and transparency

Equipment:

Telescope: TEC 140 Refractor f/7 980mm fl

Mount: Losmandy G-11 Gemini
Camera: ST-10XME; CFW10; Internal ST10 autoguider

Notes:

Exposures: 2 hrs (15 min subs) of Lum and 20 min each of RGB (5 min subs) for total of 3 hrs.

Discovered by Sir William Herschel in 1786. NGC is one of the most famous examples of an edge on spiral galaxy. The small galaxy above and to the left is NGC 4562 while two smaller galaxies to the right of NGC 4565 are designated IC3546 and IC3543.

Field of View =43.7 x 27.6 arc minutes
